MAKERS OF THE FINEST BESPOKE CURTAINS, CUSHIONS AND ROMAN BLINDS
Trained and working in the ‘60’s as a secondary school domestic science teacher teaching needlework, Audrey Johnsmade her first small pair of curtains for the family on the kitchen table at home. A request from a neighbour for a pair just the same soon lead the village to the door with similar requests.
Switching careers and skills to become a graphic designer for the newly opened Torch Theatre at Milford Haven in the ‘70’s Audrey continued to make her soft furnishings under the label ‘Lamp House’, moving into an empty Neyland High Street former ‘bookies‘ shop, such was the demand for increased workroom space.
In the 80’s, larger High Street premises were soon followed by a bold move to a small
enterprise industrial estate at Brunel Quay – from where Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s first narrow gauge railway tracks had pioneered running trains from Neyland to Paddington – with a few close friends becoming her first staff members.
The 90’s saw a move next door to a larger industrial unit, a former sail loft on the quayside at Brunel Quay which benefitted from larger floor space, enough to accommodate the by then, dozen staff.
Not content with early success, Audrey balanced time away from the business to study for a degree in Fine Art at Carmarthen Art College becoming a successful fine art painter in her own right, a passion for which she continues to paint and exhibit today.
In 2010 Audrey’s daughter-in-law Jane Johns, a qualified management accountant, and Audrey’s son George Johns, a Cameraman of 25 years, bought the business. They have since built on the foundations of the business by building larger customised premises (where everything is made in Pembrokeshire), establishing a permanent presence in Central London, expanding the measuring, making, installation, delivery and administration teams and creating a new ‘Factory Showroom‘ experience for retail customers to enjoy.
Audrey Johns Ltd has 50 staff members, some of who are from families that have been with us for over 30 years. Supporting Interior Designers across the country and overseas on a wide range of projects from Private Residential, Developer Show-Homes, Corporate, Retail and Boutique Hotels.
